I have a new found love of gouache paints and I’ve been enjoying using them to make colourful abstracts. I’ve got a nice collection of them now but the only obstacle I’ve had was not being able to quickly find the colour I wanted. See in the photo above how they all look so similar.🫢I am an impatient person!😬
I saw someone on Youtube paint the individual lid tops with each tube colour. This seemed like a chore that didn’t thrill me at the time so I ploughed on with the process of rummaging through the basket each time to find the colour I wanted. I often don’t know the colour I want until I see it so I had to pre-think the next move for each colour change. Not great when you’re tying to be creative and spontaneous!
The Game Changer
I had a spare half hour so I went through each of them painting the lid. It didn’t take as long as I thought and let me tell you it was a game changer! Look how inviting they are now! They’re even in a smaller basket and I can see all the gorgeous colours together really easily!
The gouache I use is acrylic and dries really quickly leaving a waterproof surface. This makes it great as layers. You can see me here painting a layer of diluted ink over the gouache, so fun to do.
As the end of the summer approached we’ve had a few days out before autumn arrives.
One place we went to see was Buckfast Abbey in Devon. I last visited a few years ago and it’s still as beautifully serene and peaceful as ever.
The gardens have changed and grown. Here’s the photo I took a few years ago
and here’s the same part of the garden again. Very different! Nature’s taken over and made it look quite magical.
So as I write, we got back last night from a short break in beautiful Cornwall.
It rained a bit but it was still lovely.
I hope you’ve had some lovely moments of summer too.🥰
Painting the lids is a great idea... just watch out for any tricksters on April Fools Day! 😉
I did my first two paintings with gouache in the last 2 weeks. I was intimidated at first, but it is super cool. Painting the tops of the lids seems like a great idea…it makes finding the color you want so much easier😎
